Habit Formation to Excel in Studies

Have you noticed that most students know how to get better marks than what they have been getting but they don’t seem to be improving on that? Similarly most of the sales people know how to sell more than what they are selling at present. What holds them? There are many people who are constantly in debt. They know how to come out of that but they don’t. Why?  Most people know how to do the job better than what they are doing. But they are not able to do so. Their actions and what they know do not go together. The reason is that they haven’t applied their knowledge to form good habits. They know, but they don’t have the habit to work as per that. Bad habits are holding them.

In truth, the only difference between those who have failed and those who have succeeded lies in the difference of their habits. Good habits are the key to all success. Bad habits are the unlocked door to failure. Thus, the first law I will obey, which precedes all others, is--"I will form good habits and become their slaves." Og Mandino.

Is habit formation so important in Studies?  Can various competitive examinations be taken successfully with excellent knowledge of subjects but without having a sound habit? Let us take an example of IIT-JEE. While taking the IIT-JEE, you have to be at your conceptual best during the examination hours. You will be tested on all the three subjects, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics on the same day during the examination. The syllabus is vast. If you have to put effort into recalling the theories and concepts while solving the problems in the examination, then you will not be able to attempt a sufficient number of questions to get you in IIT. You would definitely like the situation if theories, concepts and ideas to solve those problems keep coming to your mind automatically during the examination. So merely the knowledge of theories in the subjects will not help unless a strong retrieval and application mechanism is developed.

By forming the habit of doing certain activities you are able to do them with complete ease and almost automatically. This can be used advantageously in any walk of life including your studies.

When you do an activity for the first time you have to think about each step and perform the activity. But when you keep doing the activity repetitively you develop the habit of doing that. Then the activity becomes so easy for you that you can do that without much of the effort. Ideas related to that activity start flowing to your mind automatically. When you do an activity due to a habit, you use the power of the subconscious mind. It’s important to use the power of the subconscious mind which dictates most of our activity. As you practice an activity and become independent of conscious thinking during the performance of the activity you achieve a state where the activity is performed automatically by the subconscious mind. To achieve better results, you need to push your knowledge to this part of your mind by practicing and habit formation.

You might have noticed such people who keep making similar mistakes. Even after realizing that such mistakes should not be repeated they repeat it again the next time. In fact, by repetitively doing the same mistake one pushes his wrong approach to the subconscious mind and after that things start happening almost automatically. To come out of that he has to be very conscious and build the correct habit.

Habit formation should not be taken as a separate project while studying. It should be integrated with regular studies to avoid conflicts between habit formation and regular studies. Sounds tricky! Relax, It is easy to do. Courses developed by us take care of this aspect. Join, study, practice, ask questions and enjoy your studies.
